영어 논문에서 다양한 비교 표현 방법

영어 논문을 쓰다 보면 비교 표현을 많이 쓰게 됩니다.

특히 표나 그래프로 정리된 수치(데이터) 자료를 설명할 때 비교 표현을 많이 쓰게 되는데요.

영어에서 비교를 표현하는 방법은 매우 다양합니다.

숫자/비율을 비교하는 경우가 많은데요, 주의할 사항은 문장 처음에 숫자를 쓸 때는 풀어서 써야 한다는 점입니다.

아래 사례 1에서 56%가 문장 처음에 나올 때는 Fifty-six percent라고 풀어서 쓴 것을 알 수 있습니다.

영어 논문에 많이 쓰이는 대표적인 비교 표현 방법들을 예문과 함께 알아보겠습니다.

1. in contrast to 사용 

(예문 1)

여자 아이들 중 56%와 남자 아이들 중 64%는 자신의 부모가 신앙 문제를 결정한다고 답변한다.

Fifty-six percent of girls report that their parents decide matters of faith in contrast to 64% of boys.

2. 비교급 사용: fewer than 또는 more than

(예문 2)

자신의 부모가 신앙 문제를 결정한다고 답변한 여자 아이들이 남자 아이들보다  더 적었다.

Fewer girls than boys reported that their parents decide matters of faith.

(예문 3)

자신의 부모가 신앙 문제를 결정한다고 답변한 남자 아이들이 여자 아이들보다  더 많았다.

More boys than girls reported that their parents decide matters of faith.

만약 정확한 숫자를 말하고 싶을 경우, 예를 들어, 8%의 차이가 날 경우 예문 3을 다음과 같이 쓸 수 있습니다.

(에문 4)

자신의 부모가 신앙 문제를 결정한다고 답변한 남자 아이들은 여자 아이들보다 8% 더 많았다.

Eight percent more boys than girls reported that their parents decide matters of faith.

3. not as many as 사용

(예문 5)

위 예문 4를 다음과 같이 번역할 수도 있습니다.

Not as many boys reported that their parents decide matters of faith.

4. 배수의 표현: more than * as many / nearly * as many / * that of / * higher  than that of  (*는 twice, three times 등의 배수)

몇 배 이상 더 많다거나 적다는 표현을 써야 하는 경우가 있습니다.

(예문 6) 

...라고 답변한 남성들이 여성들보다 2배 이상 더 많았다.

More than twice as many men as women reported ....

(얘문 7) 

...라고 답변한 남성들이 여성들보다 거의 3배 더 많았다.

Nearly three times as many men reported .... 

(예문 8)

위험이 적다고 생각한 남성의 비율은 여성의 비율보다 2배 이상 더 많았다.

The percentage of men who thought there was only a slight risk was over twice that of women.

(예문 9)

위 예문 8을 다음과 같이 쓸 수도 있습니다.

The percentage of men who thought there was only a slight risk was over two times higher than that of women.

5. 비교 대상들의 숫자가 비슷할 경우의 표현: nearly the same number of ....

(예문 10)

... 라고 대답한 남성과 여성의 수는 거의 같았다.

Nearly the same number of men and women reported...

6. exceed that of 사용 

(예문 11)

상당한 많은 위험이 있다고 생각한 여성의 비율은 남성보다 더 높았다.

The percentage of women who thought there was quite a bit of risk exceeded that of men.

7. less than 사용

(예문 12)

미국 학생들은 대부분의 분야에서 외국인 학생들보다 평균적으로 더 적은 시간 내에 박사학위 과정을 이수한다.

U.S. students in most fields on average complete doctoral programs in less time than international students.
